In today’s world, organized sports offer children opportunities to build friendships, develop confidence, and learn valuable life skills. However, for many families, financial constraints create a significant barrier to accessing these benefits. The costs associated with sports—registration fees, equipment, uniforms, and travel—can be prohibitive, especially in underserved communities. Cross & Field is committed to breaking these financial barriers and ensuring that every child, regardless of their financial background, has the chance to participate in sports. By actively working to reduce these financial burdens, they are expanding access to youth sports for children in both the U.S. and Nicaragua.
Understanding the Financial Barriers
The cost of enrolling a child in organized youth sports can add up quickly. In the U.S., registration fees for youth sports can range from $50 to $500 per season, while equipment and uniforms can cost hundreds more. On average, families spend over $700 annually per child to participate in youth sports, not to mention additional costs like travel, coaching, or tournament fees.
While many U.S. families can absorb these expenses, for low-income families, these costs can be overwhelming. In Nicaragua, where the average household income is significantly lower, these costs are often insurmountable. With few local resources to support youth sports in Nicaragua, many children miss out on the opportunity to play altogether. Financial constraints, both in the U.S. and abroad, prevent countless children from participating in activities that foster personal growth and community connection.
Cross & Field’s Commitment to Reducing Costs
Cross & Field is determined to remove financial barriers that prevent children from enjoying youth sports. Through specific initiatives, they cover the cost of registration fees, uniforms, and equipment for children in need. They offer full program enrollment free of charge, ensuring that financial constraints do not stand in the way of kids participating in youth sports.
By partnering with businesses and sponsors, Cross & Field has successfully lowered the financial burden on families. These collaborations provide essential resources like free sports gear and uniforms, allowing children to join youth sports programs without worrying about costs. Cross & Field’s commitment has already led to success stories of children who, despite financial challenges, have been able to participate and excel in sports.

One notable example is the work Cross & Field has done in Jinotega, Nicaragua, where they have provided local children with youth sports equipment and organized activities. These children, who previously had little to no access to organized sports, now have the opportunity to play. Additionally, Cross & Field is working on creating a stadium in Jinotega to give these kids a proper space to practice and compete. This effort is a powerful example of the lasting impact that sports programs can have when access is made available to all.
How Donations Help Break Down Financial Barriers for Youth Sports
None of Cross & Field’s efforts would be possible without the generosity of donors. Donations are carefully allocated to cover essential costs like registration fees, sports equipment, and even transportation for kids who live far from sports facilities. Every dollar helps bridge the financial gap, ensuring that children from low-income families can enjoy the benefits of organized youth sports.
Through these donations, Cross & Field has been able to make a real difference. For instance, thanks to donor support, over 10 children in Nicaragua were able to participate in sports programs in previous years. The organization is always looking to expand this impact, but ongoing donations are essential to help even more kids break free from financial barriers.
To continue growing these programs and reaching more children, Cross & Field needs continued support. Whether it’s a one-time contribution or ongoing sponsorship, donations are critical to ensuring that all children, regardless of where they come from, can have the chance to participate in sports.

Sports should be accessible to all children, regardless of their financial background. Cross & Field is dedicated to making this a reality by breaking down financial barriers and expanding access to sports programs in both the U.S. and Nicaragua. By covering the costs of equipment, uniforms, and registration fees, they are ensuring that more kids can play, grow, and learn through sports.
